Honorable Justice Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari, Judge, Supreme Court of India addressing the audience in special lecture organized by Faculty of Law

Addressing the law students on the topic “Gender Justice in Globalizing World: A Legal Perspective” Justice Maheshwari, highlighted the issues of women and problems facing by LGBTQ community. Justice bifurcated the Indian justice scenario in two phases, first is since independence to 21st century and second phase is since 2000 to at present. He highlighted the many landmark cases based on gender justice delivered by Supreme Court of India such as Rajesh Kumar v. Union of India, Gaurav Jain v. Union of India, Mary Roy case, Navtej Singh Johar v. Union of India, Joseph Shine case, Sabarimala Case etc. Speaker explained “gender justice” as equality between sexes in term of rights, recourses and protection. He stated gender is primarily social and cultural term rather than a biological term and therefore a social construct which can be changed to become more just. Speaker emphasized that gender justice does not only extend to equal treatment of women but also to granting equal treatment to LGBTQ community.
