Judicial Colloquium on Theme: Exposed yet Unravelled Reflections on Gender Equality

Addressing the participants, Justice Banerjee viewed gender does not matter but patriarchy does. Previously, the United Human Rights Commission, Vienna Convention and various articles of Indian Constitution have prohibited gender discrimination and espoused the cause of gender equality.  Considering her viewpoints, honourable Ms Justice Nagarathna, viewed that “gender” matters a lot in our social order. Since independence, the Constitution has envisaged many laws for gender equality; the Supreme Court has adjudicated the laws differently, considering gender inequality. Honourable Ms Justice Ms Bela Trivedi viewed that Supreme Court has expressed displeasure over the treatment of transgender.

In the second session, Ms Sonia Gokani, judge, High Court of Gujarat, narrated that gradual evolution of social, economic and political rights of women in the last two centuries. Subsequently, the women judges of High Court of Gujarat, Honourable Ms Sangeeta Vishen, Ms Gita Gopi, Ms Vabhavi Nanavati, Ms Mauna Bhatt and Ms Nisha Thakore highlighted the Supreme Court judgments, constitutional principles, amendments in Criminal Procedure Code, Indian Penal Code in favour of Women. The virtual conference noticed the participation of 2000 plus viewers across the country.
